Police Make Two Arrests in St. Mary's Robberies


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (July 1, 2008)—Detectives from the St. Mary's County Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) continued their case solving winning streak this week when they made two arrests involving three recent robberies, including one which resulted in the death of the elderly victim.

On June 30, detectives arrested Steven Joseph Brown-Santos, age 20 of Leonardtown, for the June 20 carjacking and armed robbery of Billy Gene Gurley at the Dabbs Dental Building parking lot in Leonardtown. Detectives determined Gurley was carjacked by Brown-Santos at gunpoint when he parked in the parking lot. Police say Brown-Santos drove Gurley, in Gurley's car, to the Leonardtown Center Shopping Center where he robbed him of $37.00 and a class ring. Brown-Santos then fled on foot to his own car parked nearby.

Gurley returned to the Dabbs Building suffering from chest pains and summoned help. Gurley died at St. Mary's Hospital a short time later.

Brown-Santos was charged with armed robbery and carjacking.

On June 30, detectives arrested Charles David Burch, age 37 of Mechanicsville, for the June 24 armed robbery of the Charlotte Hall Food Lion store and the June 29 armed robbery of the Charlotte Hall Dash Inn store. Burch was charged with 2 counts of armed robbery, 2 counts of theft and 1 count of 1st degree assault.
