Somers Student Named Finalist at National History Day Event


LA PLATA, Md. (July 28, 2009)—Ryan Burton, a rising seventh grader at Milton M. Somers Middle School in La Plata, was one of six Maryland finalists honored at the 2009 National History Fair event held June 14-18 at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Burton was a finalist in the junior individual documentary category for his project titled "Benjamin O. Davis." He also received an award for the outstanding state entry in the junior division.

Burton advanced to the national contest after competing at the state level. He was the first-place winner in his category at the Charles County 2008-09 History Day competition.
