Van Collides with ATV Sending 3 to Area Hospitals


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Aug, 19, 2009)—Three men were transported to hospitals Monday when an ATV with two passengers failed to stop at a stop sign and was subsequently struck by a van.

According to police, Michael Walther, 23 of Mechanicsville, was operating a 2004 Kawasaki Prairie 700 ATV northbound on Sky View Road in Mechanicsville at approximately 8:16 p.m. Robert Blake, 27 of Montgomery Village, Maryland was the passenger.

Thomas Boarman, 82 of Mechanicsville, was operating a 1998 Ford Windstar eastbound on Golden Beach Road.

According to police investigators, Walther failed to stop the ATV at the stop sign and pulled into the path of Boarman's vehicle. Boarman's vehicle collided with Walther's vehicle.

After the initial impact, the ATV exited the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned, ejecting the driver and passenger.

Walther and Blake were flown by Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 7 to Prince George's Shock Trauma.

Boarman was flown by Maryland State Police Helicopter, Trooper 2 to Prince George's Shock Trauma.

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the accident scene and is continuing the investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Corporal Doug Mills at 301-475-4200 extension 1984.
