Charles County Opens Warming Shelter

LA PLATA, Md. (Feb. 06, 2010) – Due to the large number of citizens without electricity a warming shelter will open today, Saturday, February 06, at 6 p.m. at Milton Somers Middle School located at 300 Willow Lane off of Oak Avenue in La Plata.

This warming shelter is for those citizens and their pets (cats and dogs only) who are without power or who simply need refuge from the storm. No meals or showers will be provided. Residents must bring all necessary items to the shelter (bedding, clothing, non-perishable food items, medicines, and personal toiletries).

If you must bring your pet with you, please bring them in a pet carrier. Accommodations will be made to house your animal. Your pet, however, will not be allowed in the shelter. Only seeing-eye or hearing-eye dogs are permitted inside the shelter due to health regulations.

Do not attempt to transport yourself to the shelter unless you are able to do so safely in a four-wheel drive vehicle. If you are not able to safely transport yourself to the shelter please call 301-609-3435 and personnel will attempt to reach you and provide transport to the shelter.
