Charles Elementary Students Compete in Math Challenge


LA PLATA, Md. (April 26, 2010)—A team of fourth-grade students from Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School, and a team of fifth graders from William B. Wade Elementary School earned the top spots in the Elementary Math Challenge, held Saturday, April 17 at Theodore G. Davis Middle School.

Teams from each Charles County Public elementary schools participated in the two-part mathematics challenge that includes both team and individual competitions. Schools sent fourth- and fifth-grade teams composed of seven students each, allowing for more than 420 students including alternates, to participate. The team challenge requires each team to solve five reasoning and problem solving questions.

Higdon’s team members are Nick Bowman, Ricky Bradshaw, Shaun Burroughs, John Chipps, Robbie Delozier, Ethan Ganter, Julianne Moore, Madison Mote, Hana Shadid, Gavin Stoddard and Kyle Wedding. Team coach is Bradley Buzby, second-grade teacher at Jenifer.

Wade’s team members are Aisac Accad, Carla Arquero, D’Andre Fields, Harrison O’Connell, Maya Omais, Esha Satam and James Wash. Team coach is Donna Harris, fifth-grade teacher at Wade.

The challenge also included an individual challenge where each team member takes a test of 40 multiple-choice questions. The top five scores are compiled and added to the team score.

Shelby Green from Wade was named the individual winner for the fourth-grade level and Logan Cotner from Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School is the individual winner at the fifth-grade level.

The top five teams and the overall top three individuals at each grade level, based on the individual challenge, received a plaque provided by Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO), who sponsors the annual event.
