Charles School System, County Agencies Sponsor Summer Food Program


LA PLATA, Md. (June 22, 2010)—Charles County Public Schools, in partnership with other county agencies, is offering a summer lunch program from June 28 to Aug. 6. The program is free for children and provided by multiple Charles County agencies and organizations, and through the Federal Meals program.

Lunches are served Monday through Friday and times and locations vary. The following sites are participating in the program at the times listed:

-- Mattawoman Middle School, 12:45 – 1:15 p.m.;
-- Milton M. Somers Middle School, 12:45 – 1:15 p.m.;
-- John Hanson Middle School, 12:45 – 1:15 p.m.; and
-- Benjamin Stoddert Middle School, 1-1:30 p.m.

Additionally, the program will be offered at the following sites:

-- Henry E. Lackey High School pool, 12:15 – 12:45 p.m.;
-- Thomas Stone High School pool, 12:15 – 12:45 p.m.; and
-- Maurice J. McDonough High School pool, 12:15 – 12:45 p.m.

Some locations have also been identified as mobile meal sites, where a van will deliver the meals so they can be consumed on site. Included in these sites are:

-- Partnership Office, 651 Piscataway Court, La Plata, Md., 20646; and

-- Trinity Baptist Church, 2671 Mattawoman-Beantown Road, Waldorf, Md., 20601.

The Nanjemoy Community Center will also host a breakfast and lunch program. Call 301-246-9612 for dates, serving times and more information.

Any child between the ages of three and 18 are eligible to receive a lunch at one of the sites. Lunches are prepared by the Charles County Public Schools Food Services department and may consist of a sandwich, fruit, vegetable and milk, and will vary each day of the week. Adults transporting children to the lunch program can purchase the same meal for $3.50.

Children receiving lunches at these sites will be served along with those participating in summer camps through Charles County Parks and Recreation. These sites are staffed by Parks and Recreation, and LifeStyles Inc. of Maryland is providing volunteers and program support at several locations.

Limited Van Go passes for transportation to and from pools and camp locations are available. Call 301-934-7210 to obtain a pass. County agencies involved are Human Services Partnership (LMB), the Charles County Departments of Community Services and Social Services, LifeStyles, Inc., Charles County Parks and Recreation and the Charles County Public Library.
