Coast Guard, Local Agencies Searching for Missing Coast Guardsman


PORTSMOUTH, Va. (October 14, 2010)—The Coast Guard, Virginia Marine Police, and Newport News Fire Department are searching for a Coast Guard member who fell in the water Wednesday evening in the vicinity of the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel.

At approximately 9:15 p.m., a Coast Guard member of the Maritime Safety and Security Team New York fell off a Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team small boat during tactical boat operations with the Coast Guard Cutter Frank Drew.

Searching for the missing Coast Guardsman are the four tactical boat crews from the MSRT unit, a Coast Guard Station Portsmouth response boat crew , the Coast Guard Cutters Frank Drew and Mako, a Coast Guard rescue helicopter aircrew from Air Station Elizabeth City, a Virginia Marine Police response boat crew, and fire department and police department boat crews from Newport News.
