LA PLATA, Md. (November 1, 2010)—The Charles County Sheriff’s Office reports there was a possible attempted kidnapping of an 8-year-old girl Friday morning in White Plains.

According to police, the girl did not report the incident to anyone until the following day when she told her parents.

According to the child, she was walking to her school bus stop on Sir Michael Place and Kingsway Drive in White Plains when she observed a white cargo van parked on Sir Michael Place. As she walked past the van, a male exited and began walking behind her. The girl began walking faster at which time the suspect tried to grab her arm. The girl said she ran a short distance and was able to get to her bus stop just as the bus was pulling up. After the girl got on the bus, she said the van drove away.

Police say there have been no reports of similar incidents.

The sheriff’s office said they will increase patrols throughout the neighborhood, while an investigation is underway.

The sheriff’s office issued a reminder to parents to talk to their children about safety. Police say it is important for the child to get a good description of anyone acting suspicious and report it immediately.

Anyone with information about this or similar incidents is asked to call the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at 301-932-2222.
