Charles County Sheriff's Reports

LA PLATA, Md. (October 18, 2011)—The Charles County Sheriff's Office today released the following incident and arrest reports.

OFFICERS ARREST MAN FOR DUI AND ASSAULT: On Oct. 16 at 2:56 a.m., officers were in the 3000 block of Leonardtown Road in Waldorf when they observed an SUV being driven erratically. A traffic stop showed the driver, Jonathan Allen Thomas, 26, of Mechanicsville, was impaired. Heroin and drug paraphernalia were found inside his vehicle. Officers also linked Thomas to an assault that occurred minutes before involving an acquaintance. Thomas was charged with driving under the influence, driving while impaired, second-degree assault and possession of heroin. Officer R. Bagley made the arrest.

OFFICER ASSAULTED: On Oct. 16 at 8:30 a.m., officers responded to the 5200 block of Grunion Place in Waldorf for a suspicious person acting bizarre. As officers arrived, they observed a man running around the parking lot licking cars and putting trash in his mouth. When officers approached, the man suddenly struck one of the officers in the chest with his fist. After a brief struggle, the suspect, 38, was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer. The suspect is being mentally evaluated.

Upon arrival, officers observed two vehicles had crashed into a tree—a Ford F150 and a BMW. Officers found a male lying unconscious on the ground and determined he was the driver of the truck and had been ejected. The driver of the BMW fled prior to police arrival. The victim, 39, was transported to a nearby hospital where doctors observed bullet fragments in his cheekbone. Initially, detectives began looking at the case as a possible assault; however, further investigation revealed the fragments were from an incident that occurred in 1998 and were not related to the motor vehicle crash.
