Local Government Schedule Changes for Holidays Season


CALIFORNIA, Md. (December 16, 2011)—Local government entities have announced schedule changes for the coming Christmas and New Years holiday season.

Calvert County Government

All Calvert County government offices will be closed Monday, Dec. 26 and Monday, Jan. 2.

The Calvert Pines, Southern Pines and North Beach senior centers will be closed on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. Meals on Wheels will be delivered on those days.

Calvert Library locations will be closed Friday, Dec. 23, Saturday, Dec. 24, Monday, Dec. 26 and Monday, Jan. 2.

Transportation services will run a full-service schedule on Friday, Dec. 23. There will be no service on Saturday, Dec. 24, Monday, Dec. 26 and Monday, Jan. 2.

All Solid Waste sites will be open Friday, Dec. 23 until 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 24 until noon. Sites will be closed Christmas day. On Saturday, Dec. 31, sites will close at 4 p.m. and reopen for normal business on Monday, Jan. 2.

Charles County Government

The offices of Charles County Government and the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville will be closed on Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2, in observance of the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

The Charles County Landfill and Composting Facility off Billingsley Road in Waldorf, and the Pisgah Recycling Center on Route 425 in Pisgah will be open for normal business hours on Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2. Every other-week curbside recycling "blue bin" collection service and weekly yard waste curbside collection will not be affected by the holidays. VanGO will be operating a reduced holiday schedule on Saturday, December 24, and Saturday, December 31. Last departures from the Waldorf transfer point will be at 5:30 p.m. on the 301 Connector, Business A, Business B, and Charlotte Hall routes. Last departures from the Waldorf transfer point will be at 6 p.m. on the Berry Road, Indian Head, Pinefield, St. Charles A, St. Charles B, and St. Charles C routes. Last departures from the La Plata transfer point will be at 5:30 p.m. on the 301 Connector, Bryans Road, and Nanjemoy routes. Last departures from the La Plata transfer point for Newburg will be at 4:30 p.m., and for La Plata will be at 6 p.m.

Citizens are reminded that there is no VanGO service on Sundays, which includes Christmas Day, December 25, and New Year's Day, January 1. For more information on VanGO transit service, call the Department of Community Services, Transportation Division, at 301-934-9305 or 301-870-3388.

The Department of Community Services, Recreation Division, announces the following holiday schedule changes:

-- Lackey and North Point Pools: Closed December 24, 25, & 31, and January 1. The pools will be open for extended hours (1 p.m. -8 p.m.) Monday, December 26, through Friday, December 30.

-- Elite Gymnastics & Recreation Center: Closed December 24- 26, December 31, and January 1.

-- Community Centers: Closed Thursday, December 22, through Sunday, January 1.

-- All locations listed above are open for normal operating hours on Monday, January 2. The Department of Public Works, Parks Division, announces the following holiday schedule changes:

-- White Plains Golf Course: Closed Sunday, December 25

-- Charles County Skatepark: Closed December 24,25 & 31, and January 1

The Crain Memorial Welcome Center will be closed on Sunday, December 25, and Sunday, January 1, in observance of the Christmas and New Year's holidays. The Welcome Center will reopen for normal business hours on Monday, December 26, and on Monday, January 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Welcome Center is located at 12480 Crain Highway in Newburg. Charles County Public Schools

Winter break for students and teachers begins Thursday, Dec. 22. Students and teachers return to school on Monday, Jan. 2. Administrative offices are closed Dec. 23 and will reopen on Jan. 2.

St. Mary's County Government

County offices will be closed for business Friday, December 23 and Monday, December 26 for the Christmas holiday. All County offices will reopen Tuesday, December 27 for normal business hours. All county offices will also be closed Monday, January 2, in observance of New Years Day.

St. Mary's Bus Transit (STS) will operate all weekday routes until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 24 with no service on Sunday, December 25, 2011 or Sunday, January 1, 2012. There will also be no SSTAP services during the Christmas holiday period of December 23-26 as well as the New Years holiday period of January 1 and 2, 2012.

The St. Andrews Landfill and six Convenience Centers will be closed on Sunday, December 25, in observance of the Christmas holidays and Sunday, January 1, 2012 in observance of New Years Day, respectively. The convenience centers will be open early for operations the week of December 26 through December 31, specifically 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the landfill will be open for normal business hours during that week. Call the St. Mary's County Department of Public Works and Transportation at (301) 863-8400 for additional information about the landfill, convenience centers, or STS bus service.

Residents are encouraged to bring their undecorated trees to the landfill and convenience centers following the holiday season. Last year, the County collected nearly 15 tons of Christmas trees at the Convenience Centers. Trees are ground into mulch and used by the Department of Public Works and Transportation and the Department of Recreation and Parks to maintain county property. Almost 5,000 tons of mulch is produced annually at the St. Andrews Landfill site and is available to citizens while supplies last.

All three libraries will be closed Friday, December 23 and will reopen Tuesday, December 27 in observance of the Christmas holidays as well as Monday, January 2, 2012 in observance of New Years Day.

St. Mary's County Senior Activity Centers will be closed on Friday, December 23 and Monday, December 26 in observance of the Christmas holidays as well as Monday, January 2, 2012 in observance of New Years Day. Additionally, there will be no Meals on Wheels delivery.

College of Southern Maryland (CSM)

The last day of classes for the Fall 2011 semester and Minisession II is Monday, Dec. 19. The college will close at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 21 through Sunday, Jan. 1 in observance of the winter holidays. The college will resume its normal schedule Monday, Jan. 2 at 8 a.m. During this time, access to the college's online services, including registration, remains available at www.csmd.edu through my.CSMD services. Classes begin for Spring 2012 Semester and Minisession I on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA)

The MVA will close its full-service and express offices on Friday, December 23, through Monday, December 26, and again on Friday, December 30, through Monday, January 2, 2012. All Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) stations will also be closed. These closures are in observance of the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays and in accordance with the statewide budget reduction plan.

All MVA Offices will be open for regular business on Monday, December 19, through Thursday, December 22, 2011 and also Tuesday, December 27 through Thursday, December 29.

Customers are encouraged to complete their MVA transaction online. Many MVA transactions can be completed from anywhere via the Internet (www.mva.maryland.gov) with eMVA. They include vehicle registration renewals and changes of address.
