Man Jumps to Death from P.F. Motel Rooftop

CALIFORNIA, Md. (April 2, 2012)—Police in Calvert County report that a 44 year-old Lusby man jumped to his death Saturday afternoon around 1:22 p.m. Joseph Kirk Nguyen jumped from the rooftop of the Super 8 Motel, located at 40 Commerce Lane in Prince Frederick, after refusing to speak with police negotiators.

Deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office were called to the motel to check the welfare of a male that was hanging out of a second story window. When deputies arrived on scene, they observed Mr. Nguyen standing on an awning outside of a second story window. Police say Nguyen refused to go back into the window and instead climbed from the awning up onto the roof of the building. Nguyen situated himself on top of a roof peak at the rear of the hotel. Nguyen was talking on his cell phone and refused to talk to deputies on the scene.

Several Negotiators from the C.C.S.O. Conflict Management Team arrived on scene. Police say their negotiators attempted to contact Mr. Nguyen by phone but were unsuccessful. The negotiators got inside of a Fire Department Ladder Truck and were lifted up so that they could talk to Nguyen. Nguyen again refused to converse with the deputies and jumped from the roof.

Police say Mr. Nguyen was unconscious and unresponsive after the fall. EMS immediately started to administer first aid. Nguyen was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma where he was pronounced dead at 2:18 p.m.
