Notice of Public Hearing Cancellation

The St. Mary's County Department of Land Use and Growth Management's scheduled variance hearing of January 9, 2014 has been canceled.

The following advertised administrative variance has been withdrawn: VAAP #12-1616, Talon: Variance from Section 32.3.2 and Schedule 32.1 of the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance to reduce the rear yard setback from the mandatory stream buffer from 20 feet to 10 feet. The property, lot 40, Broad Creek Subdivision, is located at 24652 Broad Creek DR, Hollywood, MD as shown on tax map 0026, grid 0024, parcel 0478 in the Residential, Low-Density (RL) District.

Lexington Park Business and Community Association's monthly meeting

Join us for the Lexington Park Business and Community Association's monthly meeting scheduled for this Wednesday, January 8th starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Bay District Fire Department. St. Clement's Island Museum to Host Appraiser Fair

What are your precious heirlooms worth? Bring them to the St. Mary's County Museum Division's Appraiser Fair at the St. Clement's Island Museum on Saturday, January 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to find out. It's almost like the Antique Roadshow!

Expert appraisers representing the following categories will take part: fine arts, jewelry, antique and vintage dolls, and U.S. coins. The fine arts category encompasses a broad spectrum of items, including ceramics, pottery, glassware, artwork/paintings, music boxes, and curiosity items. Items in this category are limited to two items per person for a $5 fee per item. Other category fees are $5 for the first two items and $10 per item thereafter. (Ten U.S. Coins will be evaluated per $5 fee.)

Only bring items that can be hand-carried. Space is limited and items will be viewed on a first come, first served basis. Appraisals are not certified however one can make arrangements for a certified appraisal at a later date and time.

Guests can enjoy are waiting they can also enjoy a free chocolate tasting inside the Crab Claw Museum Store. Discover the purity of 18th-century chocolate from American Heritage Chocolate, made by the Historic Division of MARS, Inc. This chocolate is available in block, powder and sticks.

Nominations Sought for Woman of the Year and Woman of Tomorrow Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2014 Woman of the Year and 2014 Woman of Tomorrow awards from the St. Mary's County Commission for Women. The winners will be announced and all nominees will be recognized at the Commission's annual Women's History Month Banquet on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at the Dr. James Forrest Career and Technology Center in Leonardtown.

The Woman of the Year award acknowledges exemplary community service and the Woman of Tomorrow award recognizes a high school-aged, young woman for exemplary community service. You may submit a nominee for either award or both. Deadline for nomination forms to be submitted is January 31, 2014.

Those interested in attending the banquet, the cost is $20 per person and includes dinner. Reservation deadline is March 3, 2014.

Proceeds from the banquet benefit the Jane Hale Sypher Scholarship at the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown, which supports a non-traditional student who is a single parent or displaced homemaker.
