Anti-Stigma Workshop Coming to St. Mary's County

The St. Mary's County Department of Aging and Human Services is bringing the On Our Own of Maryland, Inc.'s Anti-Stigma Project: in Our Work, in Our Lives to St. Mary's County.

The workshop will explore attitudes and perceptions about people in our community living with mental illness and reduce the negative connotations associated with seeking professional treatment. The interactive workshop will include the Anti-Stigma Project in the morning and a presentation of In Our Own Voice by St. Mary's NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) in the afternoon. In Our Own Voice features individuals sharing their personal experiences with mental illness.

The public is invited to attend and learn about the impact of stigmatizing attitudes related to both mental illness and substance abuse in the workplace and personal relationships. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

The workshop will be held at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center on May 22 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Seating is limited. Those interested in attending should RSVP by Friday, May 16 by calling 301-475-4200 ext. 1680.

Continuing Education Units (C.E.U.s) are available.

2014 Summer Youth Bus Passes Now Available

Monthly Summer Cruiser Bus Passes are now available for residents 18 years old and younger. The $20 Monthly Pass allows for unlimited rides on St. Mary's County Transit System (STS) buses for one month at a time. The passes are available for the months of June, July and August.

To purchase a Summer Cruiser Pass, please call 301-863-8400 ext. 1120, or email sts.dispatchers@stmarysmd.com. A photo ID will is required to confirm age. Additional information regarding bus schedules or County transportation programs can also be obtained by calling or emailing.

St. Mary's County to Pay Tribute to Law Officers at 14th Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

The St. Mary's County Department of Aging & Human Services, Triad/S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) Council and the St. Mary's Board of County Commissioners is sponsoring the 14th Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Ceremony.

The event takes place Tuesday, May 13 at 11:30 a.m. at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, 44219 Airport Road, California, Maryland. This event occurs during National Police Memorial Week and will pay tribute to law officers who have perished in the line of duty as well as honor the Officer of the Year selected from each county law enforcement agency, based on their outstanding service to the community.

The public is invited to enjoy the ceremony and complimentary catered lunch following the event. RSVPs are not required, but encouraged. For more information contact Jennifer Stone at 301-475-4200, ext. 1073.

Commission on Aging Changes its May Meeting Date

Due to the Memorial Day holiday, the Commission on Aging will hold their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Monday, May 19th from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Garvey Senior Activity Center.
